There are three main types of valves used in domestic plumbing and heating systems. Gate and Ball valves either shut off or open the flow of liquid. Globe valves allow you to regulate the flow of liquid more easily, and are often used in older design taps. Ball valves are generally used in favour of Gate valves as they are more reliable and less likely to seize up.
